Title: The Development of IoT Applications: Requirements and state of the art

Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that has rapidly evolved in recent years as an umbrella term for interconnected smart objects, services, and applications. The dissemination of the IoT paradigm has a wide potential to produce a considerable impact in the daily lives of human beings with the emergence of new applications and systems from several real-world domains. IoT environments are inherently characterized by a high degree of hardware and software heterogeneity, encompassing devices with different capabilities/functionalities and network protocols. In this context, middleware platforms have arisen as promising solutions to abstract away the specificities of such devices from applications and/or end-users, to promote interoperability among them, and to contribute to facilitate and leverage the development of IoT applications. This talk focuses on presenting the requirements for an IoT platform and some existing solutions in terms of middleware for IoT, sheding the light on the main functionalities of each platform and the challenges to be addressed in future research.

Thais Batista Bio :
Thais Batista is an associate professor at the Computer Science Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Natal, Brazil. She received her M.Sc. and Ph.D.
in Computer Science from the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil. During two periods (2004-2005 and 2013-2014), she was a post-doctoral researcher at the Lancaster University, UK with professor Gordon Blair in the “Next Generation Middleware” research group. She is the head of the Software Engineering and Distributed Systems Group since 2006. She was in the director board of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) from 2008 to 2012. In 2011, she was general co-chair of the Congress of the Brazilian Computer Society (CSBC 2011), with 2500 attendees. She has published more that 150 papers. Thais Batista is one of the authors of the “Middleware Solutions for the Internet of Things” book
[Delicato et al. 2013], which has been published by Springer in 2013.
