Titre\u00a0: <\/strong>An Autonomic Strategy for Auto-scaling Smart Cities Platform Infrastructures<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smart cities application development platforms are complex systems that receive, store, process, and display large volumes of data
from different sources, having several users, such as citizens, visitors, government, and companies. The underlying information
technology infrastructure to support smart cities platforms needs to deal with the highly dynamic workload of the different applications,
with simultaneous access from multiple users and sometimes working with a large number of interconnected devices. Typically, the underlying
infrastructure encompasses cloud platforms that offer an elastic and highly dynamic infrastructure for data storage and computation, capable
of scaling up or down according to the smart cities applications demands. In this talk we discuss the proposal of an atomic strategy for
auto-scaling smart cities platform infrastructures. This auto-scaling strategy follows the MAPE-K control loop to dynamically adjust the
infrastructure in response to workload changes. It supports scenarios where the number of processing requests is unknown beforehand. The
strategy is used in the computational environment that supports the Smart Geo Layers (SGeoL), a platform for developing smart cities applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biography: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tha\u00eds Batista is a full professor at the Computer Science Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Natal, Brazil. She received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil. During two periods (2004-2005 and 2013-2014), she was a post-doctoral researcher at the Lancaster University, UK with Professor Gordon Blair in the Next Generation Middleware research group. She is the head of the Software Engineering and Distributed Systems Group since 2006. Level 1 researcher in CNPq (the Brazilian Council for Research), she has served as a member of the Advisory Board for Computer Science at CAPES (sector of the Brazilian ministry of education responsible to evaluate Brazilian graduate programs) from 2008 to 2013. She has also served as Program Committee Member for several national and international conferences and workshops on software architecture, network and distributed systems, and software engineering related topics. She was Vice-President of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) from 2015-2019. She was General Co-chair of the Congress of the Brazilian Computer Society (CSBC 2011), with 2,500 attendees. Prof. Dr. Thais Batista published more than 200 papers and she was supervisor of 34 MSc dissertations and 13 PhD theses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
