In the future communication networks, users are anticipated to become even more mobile demanding for ubiquitous connectivity to different applications which will be preferably aware of their context. Admittedly, location information as part of their context is of paramount importance from both application and network perspectives. From application or user point of view, service provision can upgrade if adaptation to the user\u2019s context is enabled. From network point of view, functionalities such as routing, handoff management, resource allocation and others can also benefit if user\u2019s location can be tracked or even predicted.<\/p>\n<p>Within this context, we focus our attention on indoor localization and handoff prediction which are indispensable components towards the ultimate success of the envisioned pervasive communication era. While outdoor positioning systems have already proven their potential in a wide range of commercial applications, the path towards a successful indoor location system is recognized to be much more difficult, mainly due to the harsh indoor characteristics and requirement for higher accuracy. Similarly, handoff management in the future heterogeneous wireless networks is much more challenging than in traditional homogeneous networks. Handoff schemes must be seamless for meeting strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the future applications and functional despite the diversity of operation features of the different technologies. In addition, handoff decisions should be flexible enough to accommodate user preferences from a wide range of criteria offered by all technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The main objective of this thesis is to devise accurate, time and power efficient location and handoff management systems in order to satisfy better context-aware and mobile applications. For indoor localization, the potential of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies as standalone location sensing technologies are first studied by testing several algorithms and metrics in a real experimental testbed or by extensive simulations, while their shortcomings are also identified. Their integration in a common architecture is then proposed in order to combine their key benefits and overcome their limitations. The performance superiority of the synergetic system over the stand alone counterparts is validated via extensive analysis.<\/p>\n<p> Regarding the handoff management task, we pinpoint that context awareness can also enhance the network functionality. Consequently, two such schemes which utilize information obtained from localization systems are proposed. The first scheme relies on a RFID tag deployment, alike our RFID positioning architecture, and by following the WLAN scene analysis positioning concept, predicts the next network layer location, i.e. the next point of attachment to the network. The second scheme relies on an integrated RFID and Wireless Sensor\/Actuator Network (WSAN) deployment for tracking the users\u2019 physical location and subsequently for predicting next their handoff point at both link and network layers. Being independent of the underlying principle wireless access technology, both schemes can be easily implemented in heterogeneous networks. Performance evaluation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed schemes over the standard protocols regarding prediction accuracy, time latency and energy savings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R\u00e9sum\u00e9 de la th\u00e8se :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moins d&rsquo;une \u00e9volution consid\u00e9rable dans l&rsquo;informatique mobile, r\u00e9seau sans fil et des appareils portatifs. Dans les r\u00e9seaux de communication \u00e0 venir, les utilisateurs devraient \u00eatre encore plus mobile exigeant une connectivit\u00e9 omnipr\u00e9sente \u00e0 diff\u00e9rentes applications qui seront de pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence au courant de leur contexte. Certes, les informations de localisation dans le cadre de leur contexte est d&rsquo;une importance primordiale \u00e0 la fois la demande et les perspectives du r\u00e9seau. Depuis l&rsquo;application ou de point de vue utilisateur, la fourniture de services peut mettre \u00e0 jour si l&rsquo;adaptation au contexte de l&rsquo;utilisateur est activ\u00e9e. Du point de vue du r\u00e9seau, des fonctionnalit\u00e9s telles que le routage, la gestion de transfert, l&rsquo;allocation des ressources et d&rsquo;autres peuvent \u00e9galement b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier si l&#8217;emplacement de l&rsquo;utilisateur peuvent \u00eatre suivis ou m\u00eame pr\u00e9dit.<\/p>\n<p>Dans ce contexte, nous nous concentrons notre attention sur la localisation \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur et de la pr\u00e9vision transfert qui sont des composants indispensables \u00e0 la r\u00e9ussite ultime de l&rsquo;\u00e8re de la communication omnipr\u00e9sente envisag\u00e9. Alors que les syst\u00e8mes de positionnement en plein air ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 prouv\u00e9 leur potentiel dans un large \u00e9ventail d&rsquo;applications commerciales, le chemin vers un syst\u00e8me de localisation \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur de succ\u00e8s est reconnu pour \u00eatre beaucoup plus difficile, principalement en raison des caract\u00e9ristiques difficiles \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur et l&rsquo;exigence d&rsquo;une plus grande pr\u00e9cision. De m\u00eame, la gestion de transfert dans le futur des r\u00e9seaux h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8nes sans fil est beaucoup plus difficile que dans les r\u00e9seaux traditionnels homog\u00e8nes. R\u00e9gimes de proc\u00e9dure de transfert doit \u00eatre sans faille pour la r\u00e9union strictes de qualit\u00e9 de service (QoS) des applications futures et fonctionnel malgr\u00e9 la diversit\u00e9 des caract\u00e9ristiques de fonctionnement des diff\u00e9rentes technologies. En outre, les d\u00e9cisions transfert devraient \u00eatre suffisamment souple pour tenir compte des pr\u00e9f\u00e9rences utilisateur d&rsquo;un large \u00e9ventail de crit\u00e8res propos\u00e9s par toutes les technologies.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;objectif principal de cette th\u00e8se est de mettre au point pr\u00e9cis, l&rsquo;heure et l&#8217;emplacement de puissance et de syst\u00e8mes efficaces de gestion de transfert afin de mieux satisfaire applications sensibles au contexte et mobiles. Pour obtenir une localisation \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur, le potentiel de r\u00e9seau local sans fil (WLAN) et Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) que l&#8217;emplacement autonome technologies de d\u00e9tection sont d&rsquo;abord \u00e9tudi\u00e9s par des essais plusieurs algorithmes et param\u00e8tres dans un banc d&rsquo;essai exp\u00e9rimental r\u00e9el ou par de nombreuses simulations, alors que leurs lacunes sont \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9s. Leur int\u00e9gration dans une architecture commune est alors propos\u00e9e afin de combiner leurs principaux avantages et surmonter leurs limitations. La sup\u00e9riorit\u00e9 des performances du syst\u00e8me de synergie sur le stand alone homologues est valid\u00e9e par une analyse approfondie.<\/p>\n<p>En ce qui concerne la t\u00e2che de gestion transfert, nous rep\u00e9rer que la sensibilit\u00e9 au contexte peut aussi am\u00e9liorer la fonctionnalit\u00e9 du r\u00e9seau. En cons\u00e9quence, deux de tels syst\u00e8mes qui utilisent l&rsquo;information obtenue \u00e0 partir des syst\u00e8mes de localisation sont propos\u00e9es. Le premier sch\u00e9ma repose sur un d\u00e9ploiement tag RFID, comme notre architecture de positionnement RFID, et en suivant la sc\u00e8ne WLAN analyse du concept de positionnement, pr\u00e9dit l&#8217;emplacement r\u00e9seau de la prochaine couche, c&rsquo;est \u00e0 dire le prochain point de fixation sur le r\u00e9seau. Le second r\u00e9gime repose sur une approche int\u00e9gr\u00e9e RFID et sans fil de capteur \/ actionneur Network (WSAN) de d\u00e9ploiement pour la localisation des utilisateurs physiques et par la suite pour pr\u00e9dire la prochaine leur point de transfert \u00e0 deux couches de liaison et le r\u00e9seau. Etre ind\u00e9pendant de la technologie d&rsquo;acc\u00e8s sans fil principe sous-jacent, les deux r\u00e9gimes peuvent \u00eatre facilement mises en \u0153uvre dans des r\u00e9seaux h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8nes.
