Abstract

The path towards communication ubiquity started years ago with the aim of offering to users different services anytime and anywhere.

This is becoming true only because wireless and mobile communications have had a remarkable evolution, as has the miniaturization of mobile terminals, while keeping high performance and security.

After the deployment success of the IP model over fixed networks, also with the proliferation of wireless technologies and the need of users to get the network services anywhere and anytime, then the IP model had to face different challenges related to wireless communications, mobility and more recently ubiquity.

IP being the defacto protocol to interconnect heterogeneous networks, adding a set of other protocols for control as well as for management, has followed its path and became slowly the convergence vector in the evolving telecommunication systems building the All-IP converged networks and services.

Even though, efficient mobility and location support, service continuity in homogeneous and heterogeneous wireless networks, transparent and ubiquitous access to network services and applications, are not yet truly solved by the IP model…….
